Arise, shine, for your light has come,
and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you.
And nations shall come to your light,
and kings to the brightness of your rising.
Lift up your eyes all around, and see;
they all gather together, they come to you;
your sons shall come from afar,
and your daughters shall be carried on the hip.
Then you shall see and be radiant;
your heart shall thrill and exult.
The sun shall be no more your light by day,
nor for brightness shall the moon give you light;
but the LORD will be your everlasting light,
and your God will be your glory.
Isaiah 60
A cold drink in the sweltering heat. A warm fire on a wintry night. An earnest ear tuned in to hear your ideas and passions. A shoulder to cry on. A good make-you-cry-snot-and-wheeze type of belly laugh. A community with you through thick and thin.
This world has many joys—which are graciously given to all humanity. But as beautiful as these small joys may be, all are ultimately fleeting. Worldly joys are but shadows. If so, where might we find the true source that transcends the transient?
The bible tells us that in God's presence is the fullness of joy. That's what Psalm 16 teaches us. God himself desires that all people would "taste and see that the Lord is good", and in so doing, come to know his immanent eternal joy. Of course this is true for the Japanese too, a people that is about 0.5% Christian.
It is this vision of the radiance of our joy—the New Dawn—that drives the mission.
Would you join me in praying that Japan may come to know the love that never dies, the joy in Jesus Christ?
